A dedicated sports fan, McLaughlin supports the Washington Commanders and Nationals. While he grew up a fan of the Washington Capitals, his son attempts to convert him into a Carolina Hurricanes supporter.

Music is another essential aspect of his life. He enjoys attending concerts and is currently learning to play the guitar. His musical preferences are diverse, ranging from The Grateful Dead and 311 to Bonnie Raitt and John Mayer.

Traveling is also one of Matthew's favorite pastimes. He has visited destinations like Paris, Amsterdam, and the Caribbean, as well as various locations across the United States. Additionally, he enjoys cooking with his children, exploring new recipes, and turning meal preparation into a fun family activity.
